Following SAS’s withdrawal from the Sundsvall-Stockholm route, LYGG was asked to step in to support the Sundsvall-Timrå region. Regardless of rising booking trends, SAS’s return with a full schedule leaves the operational window too narrow for LYGG to continue sales. The company will focus on longer term opportunities for new connections, including the Sundsvall-Gothenburg route as a part of its Nordic strategy.
When SAS announced its withdrawal from the Sundsvall-Stockholm route for November and December, LYGG on request quickly stepped in to solve the urgent connectivity problem. Despite a growing booking trend, there isn’t enough bookings to continue sales.
“We understand that adjusting to a new model and booking channel takes time with new customers. Even when the trend was positive, the booking level was insufficient given the short timeframe available for operations before SAS returning to the route” says LYGG’s CEO Roope Kekäläinen.
LYGG operates on market terms and aims for sustainable flights both environmentally and economically. LYGG’s new operational model requires sufficient booking levels before initiating operations. As a platform in aviation LYGG can launch flight routes quickly. “To make routes fly is actually very simple: show us your commitment in bookings and we start flying,” Kekäläinen explains.
“We are pleased for the region to get some connectivity back to Stockholm and want to sincerely thank all the travelers who chose to book with us. All tickets will be refunded promptly. We now know that the region is ready for longer term opportunities with us,” Kekäläinen concludes.
“We are very impressed by LYGG’s commitment and determination to step in quickly to create opportunities for businesses in the region to maintain their connection between Sundsvall and Stockholm. Sundsvall Timrå Airport and LYGG will continue their collaboration, with longer planning and increased marketing efforts, aiming to establish connections to other destinations important to the business community—removing the need for a layover at Arlanda,” says Frank Olofsson, CEO of Sundsvall Timrå Airport.
Exploring Opportunities for Sweden
LYGG continues to fly in Sweden and is also engaged in several ongoing conversations across the country. While stepping in to support the Sundsvall-Stockholm route, LYGG identified promising potential for a Sundsvall-Gothenburg connection and has included it as a part of its overall Nordic strategy.
“Sweden is a great opportunity, and Sundsvall is essential part of our strategy. We are committed to build on the already strong partnership we have established with Sundsvall Timrå Airport, connecting the region where needed,” says Kekäläinen.
