Dangerous Goods and Restricted Items

For safety reasons, certain items are prohibited or restricted on board aircraft. All passengers must comply with applicable aviation dangerous goods regulations when travelling. These rules apply to both carry-on baggage and checked baggage.

If you are unsure whether an item is permitted, please contact us before travel.

Dangerous goods

Dangerous goods are articles or substances that may pose a risk to health, safety, property, or the aircraft during transport by air.

These items are restricted under international aviation safety regulations.

Items that are prohibited on board
The following items are not permitted in passenger baggage under any circumstances:

  • Explosives and fireworks (including flares and ammunition)
  • Flammable fuels and fuel containers (e.g. petrol, camping fuel)
  • Compressed gas cylinders (e.g. butane, propane)
  • Corrosive substances (e.g. acids, strong chemicals)
  • Toxic or infectious materials
  • Oxidising materials (e.g. certain bleaching powders)
  • Radioactive materials

Airport security and aircraft operators may confiscate prohibited items.

Items that may be restricted or require approval
Some items may be carried only under specific conditions or with operator approval, including:

  • Sporting weapons and ammunition (strictly regulated)
  • Dry ice (limited quantities)
  • Medical oxygen cylinders
  • Mobility aids with batteries (e.g. wheelchairs)
  • Large or unusual electronic equipment

Passengers must request approval in advance where required.

Restricted items

Lithium batteries are one of the most common restricted items in air travel.

Spare batteries and power banks

  • Spare lithium batteries and power banks must be carried in cabin baggage only
  • They must not be packed in checked baggage
  • Battery terminals should be protected to prevent short circuits

Damaged or recalled batteries

  • Damaged, defective, or recalled lithium batteries are prohibited

E-cigarettes and vaping devices

  • Must be carried in cabin baggage only
  • Must not be used or charged on board

Liquids, aerosols, and household items
Common passenger items may also be restricted, such as:

  • Aerosol sprays (large quantities may not be permitted)
  • Strong cleaning chemicals or solvents
  • Paints, varnishes, and adhesives

Passengers should avoid travelling with hazardous household or industrial products.

Checked baggage vs cabin baggage

Restrictions may differ depending on where the item is packed:

  • Some items are permitted in cabin baggage only (e.g. spare batteries)
  • Some items may be permitted in checked baggage only (e.g. certain tools)
  • Some items are prohibited entirely

Passengers are responsible for ensuring baggage contents comply with the rules.

Responsibility of passengers and booking parties

Passengers must ensure they do not carry prohibited or restricted items.
If travel is booked on behalf of another passenger, the person making the booking is responsible for ensuring all passengers are informed of these restrictions.

Operator authority and additional restrictions

Flights are operated by licensed aircraft operators, who may apply additional restrictions beyond the examples listed here. The final decision on whether an item may be carried rests with the operating carrier and airport security authorities.
