Sustainable Aviation Needs a Market-Driven Approach

Insights

Finavia’s recently released Aviation Trend Report 2025 highlights that achieving sustainable aviation requires a market-driven approach: “Air traffic in Finland should be returned to a market-driven model, and Finavia’s airport network should be optimized to match genuine demand.”

We at LYGG agree. Regional air travel has a bright future without government subsidies. The key is to optimize routes, adjust aircraft sizes to match demand, and embrace technological advancements. Current challenges often arise from public funding supporting empty flights—a model that is neither efficient nor sustainable.

Regional airports are essential for Finland’s accessibility and growth, but their profitability doesn’t depend on being part of Finavia’s costly operating model. Smaller regional airports need lighter, more flexible solutions to thrive. The priority should be keeping these airports open and accessible, ensuring they support regional vitality.

LYGG’s operational model is fully market-driven, aligning with real demand. We are not an airline but a travel platform providing connections with appropriately sized aircraft. This not only eliminates unnecessary flights but also makes travel more cost-efficient and lowers emissions effectively.

Redefining Regional Aviation with Innovation

The report also highlights electric and hybrid-electric aircraft as potential feeders for regional airports, but we see broader possibilities. Our partnerships with Ampaire and Electra demonstrate how technology can transform regional aviation.

Ampaire’s hybrid-electric technology, available as early as 2026, enhances operational efficiency, making it ideal for serving thinner passenger flows effectively. The technology reduces emissions by up to 50%, with its compatibility with SAF creating further opportunities for even greater emission reductions.

Electra’s hybrid-electric aircraft, entering the market by 2028, requires just 100 meters for takeoff and landing, opening entirely new possibilities for regional air travel.

By incorporating these into LYGG’s operational fleet, we deliver customer-centric, lower-emission air services that are ready for the future.

Regional air travel is vital to Finland’s future, supporting accessibility, economic growth, and regional development. LYGG’s vision is clear: to create sustainable, market-driven genuine connections.

We are ready to lead this transformation—together with all stakeholders.
